PUSH ON FOR THE STATE TO BUY WHITNEY PARK

With the announcement that the owner of 36,000-acre Whitney Park in Long Lake plans to sell the property for $180 million, conservationists yesterday set the wheels in motion to get the state of New York to buy it. The Whitney Park property is surrounded by vast swaths of state wild forest and wilderness. It includes 22 lakes, 80 miles of roads and 20 miles of trails. Adirondacks Executive Director Peter Bauer said Thursday, the future of the Adirondack Park as a wild and protected landscape is on the line with whether or not Whitney Park is protected.
