According to results of a study done by the Empire Center for Public Policy which were released Thursday, the North Country is losing population. In fact, the report shows that out of Franklin County’s 19 towns, all but 4 will show a population drop in the ten years since the last census. The town of Duane held steady and had no change in the past decade. The biggest decrease was in Malone, where the number of people is estimated to have fallen by 467. According to the report, the Franklin County numbers reflect a statewide trend of declining population. 84% of New York’s 931 towns had population declines, and nearly three quarters of the state’s 537 villages lost population.
