A unique agreement between the St. Lawrence County sheriff’s office, the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, and SUNY Canton, now will offer corrections officers training that can award SUNY students with school credits and certifications allowing them to work as a police officer or a corrections officer. It’s known as the SUNY Canton Corrections Academy, and it will officially kick off this coming summer, with the aim of preparing students for a career as a corrections officer. Jobs as corrections officers in our area are increasing, and current officers will offer training and assistance in the academy, which will be held from June 3rd to July 3rd, Monday through Friday, and will be taught by members of the St. Lawrence County sheriff’s office. Passing the academy will give students pre-certification to work as a county corrections officer.
